Life expectancy for pre-transitioners

Life expectancy for pre-transitioners

Postby BigLiz on 28 Jan 2010, 17:01

During the readings at TDoR we were told that the life expectancy of a trans person was 27 years. I can't remember the girl's name unfortunately or I'd ask her where she got this figure from.

I've googled and seen another source claim 23 years.

I know these figures will be impossible to pin down in view of the uncertainty about suicides, but does anyone know how these figures are arrived at? Does anyone have some alternative view on the life-expectancy of pre-transition people?

Hi Big Liz,

I haven't the foggiest idea where these figures have come from, but I suspect they are utter rubbish.

I transitioned at age 35, am now pushing 70, and in rude good health.

April Ashley, who transitioned at about age 28 in about 1963, is still about today.

Coccinelle lived to ripe old age: she was a contemporary of April Ashley and only died a few years ago.

Roberta Cowell definitely lived until into the nineteen eighties and, for all one knows, may still be around somewhere.

Christine Jorgensen, who transitioned in about 1951 lived until 1989.
