Indeed.

Although there is talk of the Tories wishing to retain ID Cards ...

But only for foreign nationals.

The problem with that is that the retention of the scheme will make the reimplementation in the future much easier, after all, they will need to retain the infrastructure including the databases and these will need to be maintained and updated as security fails. In other words, it will be a simple case of scaling up if the entire scheme is not abolished now.
